Canada Student Visa: Eligibility criteria, application process and the documents you need

Canada continues to attract numerous Indian students for higher education. Securing admission to top Canadian universities demands excellent academic records, while a study permit validates the permission to study. The embassy fee for a Canada study visa is CAD 150 for Indian students.

To study in Canada, students must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa through the Canadian High Commission, facilitated by Visa Application Centers. Upon arrival in Canada, the study permit is issued. This permit, granted by Canadian immigration authorities, is mandatory for international students to enroll in Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Processing times can take up to three months, so early application is recommended.

3. Proof of Funds: Demonstrate financial capacity to cover tuition and living expenses.
4. Passport-Size Photographs: Recent photos adhering to specified standards.
5. Immigration Medical Examination: Conducted by approved physicians.
6. English Language Proficiency Exam Score: Recommended, though not mandatory at the application stage.
7. Statement of Purpose: An essay explaining the purpose of studying in Canada.
8. Credit Card: For paying the application fee online.
9. Provincial Attestation Letter: Required for undergraduate students or non-degree courses.

3. Pay Processing Fee: CAD 150, plus additional biometric fee of CAD 85.

Online Application Process

1. Document Preparation: Ensure you have access to a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents. You will also need a valid credit card to pay the application fee.
2. Finger Scan Requirement: After submitting your application online, you must provide a finger scan at the regional Visa Application Centre (VAC).
3. Visit VFS Offices: You will need to visit VFS offices to submit your passport and provide confirmation of your application form. Additionally, you must pay the embassy fee for the Canada study visa. The documents required at the VAC will vary slightly based on your application.

Paper Application Process

1. Download the Application Kit: Obtain the application kit and instruction guide from the official website. The guide contains essential information and a document checklist to help you complete your application.
2. Eligibility for Paper Application: You can apply on paper only if:
   
   • You have a disability preventing you from applying online.
   • You hold an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees, or stateless persons

Students must apply for a permit renewal at least 30 days before expiration if their studies are not completed. Spouses and dependents can accompany students on a dependent visa, with proof of adequate funds. Spouses may also obtain an open work permit.
